VERDICT: EXPECTED MORE - DISSAPOINTED
Lets get this straight, the infamous Westcliff Hotel is by no means pretentious. It's reputation precedes it, and it is every bit as elegant and elaborate with impeccable taste. This upmarket establishment lies nestled on the slopes of an abundant made made forest in the heart of Johannesburg. The restaurant has a superb view of Johannesburg, overlooking the Johannesburg Zoo and the city itself. Given the elevated positioning of the hotel, during the day, you will find yourself surrounded by blue skies and lush vegetation and by night, you will enjoy the bright and ambient lights of the city (particularly nice in summer - when making reservations, ask to sit outside on the veranda).
On the whole, apart from the glorious ambiance and rich drapery, the food experience was over-priced, average and bland. In Robs words, “no matter what the price, what the consumer seeks for is value for money...” . How true, whilst the Westcliff itself may not have been pretentious, the food certainly seemed to be.
